Stephanie Tillman of ikros and The Hope Station – Beatnik Radio

Stephanie Tillman

“Just a girl with a story.”

Lucky for us that story is incredible, inspiring and full of hope.

Stephanie walked into the coffee shop a full 30 minutes early for our chat.  I thought she must have had our interview time wrong, I was wrong.  She showed up a half hour early to do her thing.

Handing out T-shirts and a Sharpie for people to write on the shirt with, the unsuspecting folks who just happened to be in the right place at the right time won’t soon forget her.  Stephanie is a natural engager of people (total strangers in most cases).  Stephanie has a way of reaching straight through any guard that you may have up to protect yourself from others.  No guard needed here, nothing to be afraid of but maybe getting very real and honest.  She is the kind of person who most folks feel instantly at ease with, like you have just met one of your lifelong best friends for the first time.

Four or five T-shirts and photographs later, we started our chat.  We learn the why, how and what behind Stephanie,  the T-shirts and the Sharpie.  Plenty of great advice.  Plenty of inspiring words.  One amazing story.

Thanks Stephanie!

Congratulations Jonathon! Beatnik Radio Guest Update.

Attention, Update: The Skate Bench No1 Has Been Funded.

Beatnik Radio’s Guest No1 Has Done it Again.  Listen to Episode No1

The Skate Bench No1

Jonathon Kemnitser over at KEM STUDIO had a dream, and that dream has come true.  Jon has triumphed in front of the whole world.   Jon and his team’s Kick Starter Project Skate Bench No1 has officially been fully funded.  Now the work starts, right Jon?

According to Update #7:

Some guy named Tony Hawk just contacted us about donating SKATE BENCH No.1 to his foundation. He’s going to put one of his signed thrashed decks on our frame and auction it off. We’re honored and think that’s pretty amazing! What do you think Kickstarter’s, does it sound like a worthy cause (Ha)?

 Very cool guys.  Great Job!

What is Beatnik Radio? We will have to wait and see…

I was asked a simple question,

and could not come up with an answer.

Person: “What is Beatnik Radio?”

Me: “uh, mmm, huh, well….eeerr.”

Take two, an attempt to give an answer:

Beatnik Radio is out of my hands and out of my control.  I do not own it.  Beatnik Radio belongs to the Kansas City community of creatives.  What happens to it and where it goes is just as much a mystery to me as it is to anyone else.  I do have specific ideas for some of the future direction, maybe.  There is an overwhelming amount of freedom and mystery infused in the crust of this new adventure.  More than enough to make certain that the future will be just as much a surprise to all of us as it will be a joy and a pleasure.

One fine Monday morning in September 2011 I woke up and had a vision.

The Goal: Capture the spirit of the Kansas City small business community and share it with others.

And there you have it.  Beatnik Radio.  Chasing The Spirit, wherever it shall lead.

Hello and Welcome to Beatnik Radio...All things business, all things beat.

The future is not yet written, at least not in any way that we could ever know or understand.  And so goes Beatnik Radio.

I love you Kansas City.  Lets figure it out together.

-Derek, a beatnik sort of business-like fellow.

Oddly Correct Coffee – Greg Kolsto

Released Oct 11, 2011

A conversation about coffee, miscreants, art and a very heavy printing press with coffee enthusiast Gregory Kolsto. We discuss an “Oddly Correct” journey and geek out over Kansas City’s finest coffee. Recorded live in front of a studio audience at the Oddly Correct coffee shop.  A very chewy, peanut butter and jelly conversation that turns lemon-tart as it cools.
